Fostering global conversations on the ethical issues raised by cutting edge science.

Logo: Kavli Centre for Ethics, Science and the PublicThe Kavli Centre for Ethics, Science and the Public is a unique collaboration between the University of Cambridge and Wellcome Connecting Science, with funding from The Kavli Foundation.

Major scientific breakthroughs deepen our understanding of nature and ourselves. Such discoveries have the potential to transform our everyday lives. Yet the same science that holds promise for progress often raises concerns and questions for society.

Under Centre Director Anna Middleton, Deputy Director and Research Lead Richard Milne, and Innovation and Translation Lead Catherine Galloway, we are starting with conversations around genome editing of embryos, artificial intelligence in health research, and the sharing of Big Data.

A sister Kavli Center for Ethics, Science, and the Public has also been launched at UC Berkeley in the United States. It has a similar mission but an independent programme to ours, and will initially address artificial intelligence, genome editing and neuroscience. The two centres may collaborate on key projects or events.
