We have an exciting opportunity for a Science Engagement Officer to join the newly formed Science Engagement and Enrichment team, who will be able to play a key role in co-ordinating and delivering a new and innovative programme of engagement activities.

About the role

You will work closely with the Science Engagement Manager (public and community) to support the delivery of a creative and engaging programme of activities that enables interested adults to engage with campus staff to learn about genomics and the research taking place on campus.

The role’s primary focus is to identify and building relationships with community learning groups and to oversee the day to day delivery and reporting of the Science Engagement programme which may include visits offsite to community learning groups to deliver activities and talks with campus ambassadors. The role will also assist with development and delivery of a creative programme of educational events targeted to an adult audience, on and off site and online.

You will be required to work collaboratively with the Science Engagement and Enrichment team and wider campus staff to support campus learning and engagement events, to contribute to the development learning resources for www.yourgenome.org and the creation and sharing of outreach kits.

Evaluating our impact is a key priority, this role will ensure that activity is regularly recorded and captured, helping to build evidence of impact of the adult learning programme.

Given the range of activities this role will contribute to, there will be an expectation for occasional evening or weekend working, which will be offset through our approach to flexible working and TOIL policy.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in a subject related to the work of the Wellcome Sanger Institute, for instance a STEM subject, or other related discipline that might be linked to Science Communication
  • Experience of informal learning settings such as science centres or other learning settings
  • Experience of liaising with adult community groups
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • High-level interpersonal skills and ability to work within small and large teams
  • Flexibility in working style and practice including working for short periods away
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills
  • Ability to communicate with internal stakeholders, from senior academics to support staff, with tact and diplomacy
  • Experience with basic computer software such as Word/Excel/Powerpoint
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise workloads
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve day-to-day conflicts with respect to delivery of activity
  • Driving license

Ideal Skills

  • Experience of working in research and/or its communication with external audiences
  • Experience of project management or coordination
  • Experience of evaluating projects and resources
  • Aptitude with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite or the development of web based learning resources
