Developing innovation and collective impact in public engagement within genome editing

Date: 5 September 2017

Public Engagement is helping to scope out approaches and challenges in public engagement with genome editing.

The Wellcome Genome Campus Public Engagement team is currently helping the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) to scope out approaches and challenges in public engagement with genome editing.

Supported by Wellcome, the aim is to bring together those with experience of engaging (or supporting others to engage) the public in genome editing and related fields, to synthesise learning, create tools to be shared, and generally encourage high quality public engagement in this rapidly advancing area.

The project aims to develop:
  • A comprehensive map highlighting existing public engagement activity
  • A framework to help elicit collective learning about public engagement with genome editing, including public attitudes to this area.
  • Recommendations for the future of public engagement with genome editing
  • Resources for those wanting to engage including toolkits, guides and case studies
  • Training modules to support researchers and public engagement professionals seeking to engage the public with genome editing
… and ultimately to inspire new high quality activity, filling the gaps identified from the desk research.

There are different ways to get involved, from offering experiences or opinions online to joining our events. The first event will take place in London on 26 October – Genome Editing Public Engagement Synergy – ‘What Works’ event – and is aimed at anyone interested in finding out about the GEPES project, or contributing to it.
