Work experience opportunity in the Tree of Life Laboratory

Date: 29 April 2025

Join the Tree of Life Core Laboratory at the Wellcome Sanger Institute for a unique work experience opportunity.

Location: Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton, CB10 1SA (click for map)

Dates: Monday 30 June – Friday 11 July 2025

Would you like to gain experience in scientific research into genome biodiversity? The Tree of Life Core Laboratory provide the wet-lab and sample processing support for the Tree of Life Programme, a major initiative to produce high-quality reference genomes for species of animals, plants, fungi and protists. The team is responsible for working with samples that have been collected by a wide variety of partners and collaborators, extracting high quality RNA and high molecular weight DNA to feed various sequencing platforms in order to generate the data required for reference level genome assembly. These genomes promise to transform our understanding of biodiversity, and our ability to conserve it.

This will be an immersive opportunity to join the wet lab team. You will see and participate (where appropriate) in tissue sample processing, high molecular weight DNA extraction and RNA extraction from a diversity of samples using different protocols – manual and automated,  DNA fragmentation for library preparation and a robust quality control which includes Femto Pulse run and analysis, Qubit fluorometer and NanoDrop spectrophotometer. You’ll also have the opportunity to join the R&D team and learn about ongoing projects in the ToL Core Laboratory.
